Individual Therapy for Children

Raising a child is challenging – especially nowadays.

Children have never been more connected to those outside their homes. Many children go to school, after-school care, and extracurricular activities.

When they are in the safety of their home, they become easily connected to their peers through technology. With this increased level of connection, it’s hard for children to find time to unwind, rest their brains, and recharge.

This inability to recharge can lead to increased levels of stress, negative self-views, feelings of sadness and hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, a decrease in energy, difficulty sleeping, and an increase in irritability.

These mood swings can influence their behavior at school and home.

Parents, stay alert to your child’s behavior.

Your child’s behavior and mood are likely to fluctuate throughout the day. It’s normal for children to experience various emotions throughout a single day.

Although sadness, anger, and worry are typical emotions experienced by all children, these may indicate a more serious concern for your child.

If your child is experiencing intense emotions or behavioral challenges that negatively impact their daily functioning, then individual therapy may benefit them.

Individual Therapy Children Img 2Individual therapy offers a time of reflection.

Through individual therapy, your child will have a space to reflect on their experiences. I will work with your child to identify unhelpful thinking patterns and help them learn to replace unhelpful thoughts with more helpful ones. Your child will also learn coping skills to manage their responses to intense emotions better.

Although your child will attend therapy alone, you play a vital role in the success of their treatment. Children don’t always remember the challenges they experienced between sessions. Therefore, I will rely on you to share challenges throughout the week. Knowing those challenges allows me to help your child practice skills using examples from their experiences.

Additionally, your child will be going home with practice assignments. They will need your support between sessions to schedule a time to practice the skills they learn in sessions.

Meet the challenge and help your child learn ways to recharge from emotional stress and being pulled in so many directions. Having an adult listen to their concerns and provide meaningful advice supports your child and you as a parent.
